ICT: Summary of Chapter 1 "TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM (DUDENEY AND HOCKLY, 2007)"

Thursday, 25 December 2014

Technology which uses in language teaching in the classroom is not a new one in educational world. Indeed, technology has been around in language teaching for decades-one might argue for centuries, if we classify the blackboard as a form of technology. Computer-based materials for language teaching, often, often referred to as CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), appeared in the early 1980s. Early CALL programs typically required learners to respond stimuli on the computer screen and to carry out task such as filling in gapped texts, matching sentence halves and doing multiple-choice activities.
Because of access to information and communication technology has become more widespread, so CALL is changes with the newest technology, called TELL. TELL (appeared in 1990s, in response to the growing possibilities offer
ed by the internet and communication technology. Although the use of ICT by language teachers is still not widespread, the use of technology in the classroom is becoming increasingly important, and it will be become a normal part of ELT practice in the coming years.
Many people are afraid of new technology, and with the increasing presence of the internet and computers, the term technophobe has appeared to refer to those of us who might be wary of these new developments. The term digital native has been coined to refer to someone who grows up using technology, and who thus feels comfortable and confident with it typically today’s children. In many cases, teachers are the digital immigrants and our younger students are the digital native, and a term for a technology enthusiast called technophobe or technogeeks.
A large part of negative attitudes teachers have towards technology is usually the result of a lack of confidence, a lack of facilities or lack of training, result in an inability to see the benefit of using technologies in the classroom. Teacher may want to use technology for teaching in the class, but the school may not have the facilities, or in other hand, a teacher may be instructed to start using technology for which they feel unprepared or untrained.
As we know, teachers have varying levels of access to computers and technology, and teach in all sorts of contexts to all sorts of learners. We can adjust with the condition in classroom to use ICT. They are so many questions related with the problems in the classroom, such as: there just only one computer, teach more than 30 students in class, did not know how to start for teaching use ICT, how much just preparing materials, and soon. The solutions of those problems, may be simple to do but it is depend on teachers ability. We can give the students material using projector or printing of the materials include; using website, online reference tools, a class blog with learner preparing paper and teacher typing in computer, uses group of learner when the computer is less, try to find references materials in website or another teachers.
The basic skills must be mastered for teacher such as; use the simple word processing program, how to use email and how to access and use the internet. Teacher must be able to greatly increase their ICT skills set and fell more confident using technology in the classroom. Teacher will also need some essential equipment in order to implement technology with learners, such as; at least one computer in the classroom, internet connection, printer, audio system, and basic software (word processing, web browser, and an email program).
